1953-2020

In 1994, The Debussy Trio commissioned the work Twelve Days in the Shadow of a Miracle. It showed a new aspect to the wide ranging talents of composer/keyboardist Lyle Mays, a charter member of the Pat Metheny Group. The commission was made possible by a generous grant from New Yorker Eric Bruskin. The Mays work for harp, flute, viola and pre-recorded digital score reflects a new and exciting fusion of contemporary jazz with the Trio’s instrumentation. The world premiere took place on November 10, 1994, at California’s Orange County Performing Arts Center with a subsequent East Coast premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Known to audiences worldwide, Mays toured with Bobby McFerrin and recorded with singer Joni Mitchell among others. Recognition and awards came from a wide circle, which included three Grammy Award Nominations in 1981 for “Best Jazz Performance.”

Numerous wide-ranging film and recording credits, with the Pat Metheny Group, included the 1979 nine-part science series produced by J. C. Crimmins for PBS; Falcon and the Snowman, the 1984 motion picture directed by John Schlesinger and starring Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn; Orphans, produced in Chicago by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company; and Fandango, produced in 1984 by Steven Spielberg, directed by Kevin Reynolds.
